A group of friends and I were talking to a woman from Nigeria yesterday, and one of my friends asked what her initial impressions of Americans were. She thought for a moment and said, "Americans genuinely care sometimes."
For some reason that struck me as both comically and concerningly accurate. We genuinely care "sometimes." The phrase houses both our Midwestern hospitality and our blatant callousness all at once. I don't think the woman had any idea how wise of an observation she was making, but I loved it.
