I go to enough concerts that I have a pretty good read on how the live music scene is changing over time.
It's not that artists didn't care about the safety of their crowd before the Travis Scott Astroworld incident that left ten people dead in November 2021. It just never seemed like something top-of-mind for anyone. I never heard an artist check to make sure everyone in the audience was alright. I never heard an artist tell everyone to take a step back so the people on he barricade could breathe. It just never seemed to be too much of a concern.
This changed immediately after the Astroworld incident. Ever since then, at what feels like every concert I've been to since, artists have gone out of their way multiple times to make sure everyone in the crowd is alright and pause the show whenever security needs to sort something out. It very much feels like something artists actively monitor during their sets now, and I think everyone in the venue appreciates that added layer of safety.
Maybe we should all take notes from the music industry on how to properly respond to tragedy. How to make sure an avoidable tragedy only happens once...
