Speaking of: Missing Street Signs

I use GPS to get practically everywhere. Even when I know exactly where I'm going, I plug the address into my phone just to make sure I'm going the fastest route. My sense of direction at this point is only as good as my cell signal. It's pretty bad.

It's particularly bad because I've noticed the more I use GPS, the less I notice street signs. I always ask myself the theoretical question, "Gosh, how did people get around before Google Maps?" The answer is that there was and still is a bunch of really helpful big green signs with arrows pointing to exactly what lane you have to be in if you're trying to get to San Jose or get back onto the 101. But I never actually notice these. I'm too busy trying to decode the written directions my phone is giving me and compare the actual roadways to the little roadway diagrams on my iPhone to see which street is actually the blue path I'm supposed to go down. I'm so busy with my head down in my phone that I miss so many blatantly obvious signs in front of me saying what I need to do.

That's definitely a metaphor for at least something, right?
