Speaking of: Once

I previously wrote about how my favorite movie of all time is Good Will Hunting. That's probably still true, but after watching Once this evening, it's got some serious competition for the throne.

There are so many movies about love. There are so many movies where the main characters fall in love and live happily ever after. There are so many movies where the main characters fall in love but eventually fall out of love and things don't work out. But in either case, the focus is on whether or not these characters will be together forever. The assumption whenever you're dealing with romance in films is that it's either eternal or it's useless.

There's something remarkably beautiful about romantic love that was never meant to last forever. That was never meant to exist for more than a week or a weekend. Not a one-night stand. Genuine romance that is what it is for a few days and then never is again. It doesn't prove that you've found your partner but it proves you're not alone.

Once is the best depiction of that kind of love I've ever seen.
