I can't tell you exactly why one band may be so much more exciting to watch live than another band of equally talented musicians playing equally as good of songs. But live music, like all performance, activates a sixth sense in us that can gauge how passionate the people on stage are about what they're doing. You might call it chemistry. You might call it energy. You might prefer not to overthink something as authentic as live music. But if the performers are genuinely feeling what they're playing, the audience knows. If the performers are genuinely feeling what they're playing, there's little stopping them from blowing the roof off every venue.
And likewise, if the performers are faking this passion, the audience can sniff it out in a millisecond. The sixth sense in live music is a truth serum, and boy is it a powerful one.
